On March 30 it was announced that the PMRA approved an Emergency Use Approval for 2% liquid strychnine for specific areas in Alberta and Saskatchewan under specific conditions. This approval will expire in November of 2027.

The anticipated timeline for the product to be distributed to municipalities for retail is estimated to be 8 weeks. In order to access the product, producers will be required to participate in a product stewardship training program which will be delivered through the municipality. Updates regarding the stewardship training program will be shared as they are available. Please watch our website and official social media channels for further information.

Please Note: gophers are already up for the season and the optimal window for control is NOW. Producers are encouraged to actively manage them utilizing alternative products or methods and not wait for strychnine to be available. This tool is planned to be fully available for the 2027 season but be mindful of this seasons expected timeline, limitations on application windows for this product, and potential availability challenges.
