As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the Agricultural Service Board conducts the municipal roadside weed spraying program focusing on Noxious weeds. In areas of concern, we also immediately control Prohibited Noxious in municipal areas. The A.S.B. also supports the Western Area Training Centre (DND) in their efforts to control Prohibited Noxious and Noxious weeds within their boundaries. The A.S.B. also supports the Town of Wainwright with their vegetation control program.<\/p>\n
If a ratepayer chooses not to participate in the municipal roadside weed spraying program, a \u201cNo-Spray\/ Haying Agreement\u201d is to be completed and returned to the Municipal Office every year before May 1st.<\/p>\n
As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the Agricultural Service Board conducts the municipal roadside brush control spraying program focusing on encroaching brush within municipal right-of-ways.<\/p>\n
The Agricultural Service Board works with the Public Works Department on the remediation of newly constructed municipal right-of-ways and borrow pits. Landowners have the choice of what grass seed mixture they want their owned land re-seeded to.<\/p>\n
As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the M.D. of Wainwright conducts a mowing program of approximately 850 miles of municipal roadside allowance.<\/p>\n
The A.S.B. work closely with the two municipal seed cleaning plants in Wainwright and Edgerton; by collecting seed samples, annual inspections and the issuance of yearly operating licenses. This is in accordance with the Alberta Weed Control Act.<\/p>\n
The A.S.B. conducts several seasonal agricultural pest surveys. The information gathered is incorporated into the Provincial pest control forecast maps. These maps can be accessed through the Aberta government website. The pests that are surveyed include: Grasshoppers, Clubroot of Canola, Fusarium, Wheat Midge, Bertha Armyworm, Diamondback moth and the Provincial Weed inventory Survey.<\/p>\n
The A.S.B. maintains vigilance by conducting local inspections and baiting of farms to prevent the establishment of Norway Rat infestations. This is in accordance with the Provincial Pest Control Act. For more information, view our\u00a0Calendar Photo Contest<\/a>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n The A.S.B. hosts the annual Rural Routes Supper and appreciation and recognition of the local agricultural community and area producers.<\/p>\n The Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen offer a bursary in the amount of $500.00 to post secondary students enrolled in agricultural or environmental studies, from the Northeast region of Alberta.<\/p>\n The 100 Year Farm Family Award is presented in recognition of our rural families that have farmed on their original homestead for 100 years. The family receives a metal plaque (24″ x 12″) and Municipal plaque commemorating this historic achievement. For more information, view our\u00a0Farm Family Awards<\/a>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n The A.S.B. offers private land spot-spraying operations to ratepayers for weeds such as Toadflax, Tansy, Scentless Chamomile, Leafy Spurge and other Prohibited Noxious or Noxious weeds on a cost recovery basis.<\/p>\n The Canadian Agriculture Partnership is a five year, $3 billion federal-provincial-territorial investment in the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector. This program is the successor for the Growing Forward 2 partnership. In Alberta, the Canadian Agriculture Partnership is organized under five themes; Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change; Products; Market Growth and Diversification; Science and Research; Risk Management; and Public Trust. This information is available through municipal newsletters, radio programs, posters, and newspaper articles. Periodically, ratepayer meetings are held; water-well workshops, shelter-belt meeting, crop pest updates etc. Also, problem pests can be brought into the office for information and identification.<\/p>\n The A.S.B. provides three municipal tankloader facilities for local ratepayers to use for agricultural or other special-use approvals. If the trap is damaged or lost, the renter is billed for the full replacement cost.<\/p>\n Magpie traps can be picked up at the M.D. Public Works Shop for use of up to 2 weeks. If the magpie trap is not returned after 2 weeks the borrower will be billed $125.00 plus GST for the full replacement cost.<\/p>\n Forage probes can be picked up at the M.D. Administration Office for use of up to 3 days.
